Pysanky of 2012

Its that time of year again! I love having friends and family join me to make traditional pysanky. I have been making them for years… you have no idea how many of these eggs I have stored in my apartment. This year I am very impressed with the lovely batch that was created. I hope you have a wonderful tradition that you share with your family and friends, too. I’d love to hear about it!

Because 10 years ago I decided to leave my life in the film industry and pursue a career in photography, I am always very proud when my friends do the same. Today I want to share with you some products from two very smart women who decided to take what they loved and create businesses. I am so impressed with them both! Check these out:

Simply Livly.
I shot Pam & Joe’s wedding six years ago at the lovely Rancho Las Lomas in Silverado, California. Recently, Pam sent me two gorgeous chunky necklaces from her new Etsy Shop, Simply Livly. They are the perfect amount of casual-to-dressy and can be worn to dress up a t-shirt or dress down a formal outfit. I LOOOVE them and I seriously can’t stop wearing them. They have the most darling tie and can easily be worn short or really long.

Crumb
Ann Marie and I worked together years ago when we both lived in Los Angeles. I remember how she would make everyone’s day by bringing unbelievable cookies, lemon bars and other delicious treats into the office. When Ann Marie moved to San Francisco, she started baking full-time and opened Crumb. Crumb has been providing a variety of cakes for a while now, but when Ann Marie told me that she decided to add cookies to her menu, I couldn’t be more excited!! Yesterday she gave me a variety of flavors which I shared at my client meeting last night…Big hit!!

ALSO, if you are a bride, Crumb is now baking cookies for weddings! Pysanky 2011

This post is a few days late, but I think better late than never. Easter is one of my very favorite times of the year because it means I’ll be honoring my Ukrainian grandmother’s tradition of creating lovely pysanky with my family and friends. Its an elaborate process involving beeswax, lit candles, strong colored dyes and lots and lots of paper towels, and you can see all the other years’ eggs by clicking here.

THANK YOU to all of my friends who came over this season to make pysanky with me. (In fact, if you see your egg here and you would like to pick it up, be sure to let me know! They are all shiny, emptied and ready to go.)

Sunday, April 25th is Olive’s 12th birthday. I remember 12 years ago how surprised we were when my mother’s dog, Charlie, had puppies because no one even knew she was pregnant. I was there the day my Olive was born, and I took her home with me only four weeks later. I remember trying to project into my future to imagine what my life with a dog might be like. Now I can’t imagine my life without her. She has been the very best dog and friend I could have ever hoped for, and she makes me laugh and feel happy every day.

Pysanky 2010 – Happy Easter!

Every year I pull out my pysanky tools and have friends over to make beautiful Easter Eggs. Its an elaborate process involving beeswax, lit candles, strong colored dyes and lots and lots of paper towels! They are so much fun to create, and I love it when my friends come over to make them with me. This was the first year I did it in my new place! Thanks to Michael Corsentino, Sarah Cross, my mom, my sister, my two nieces and to my new neighbor, Shari, for coming over to make eggs with me this year! They turned out so great.

I’m at the airport in San Antonio right now, but when I return home I will post a shot of all the eggs from 2010.

The transformation of Princess Millie

We went to Disneyland for Millie’s birthday which was September 26th… because you get in free on your birthday, we waited until MY birthday so that both my twin, Joy, and I could get in for free!

This was one of the most fun parts of my birthday… Millie had an appointment at the Bibity Bobbity Boo Salon to be turned into a princess for the day!! How fun to be five.

Flying over the Golden Gate Bridge

So we have been crazy this week getting the studio ready for Thursday’s big party. But when Adam, CEO & owner of Simply Canvas, flew up from LA and invited us to fly over the Golden Gate Bridge in his G3, we couldn’t say no.

Working Vacation

Oh I have a tough life. I am taking Marty, my sister and her husband to St. John, BVI to shoot a wedding with me. We are going to go ahead and take advantage of being out there by staying a few extra days, so if you call or send me an email and I don’t respond right away… please know its probably because I didn’t take my computer to the beach.

We’ll be back on Tuesday, April 29th.

When my grandmother died I was 16 years old. She had a huge collection of pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs) that she had collected – some of which my family had made while I was growing up. Her collection was split up, and I got a few of the eggs. To honor my grandmother (and because its a really fun tradition) every Easter I pull out my tools and my friends come over to make pysanky. Thank you to April Rocha, Tiffany Shine, Marty Thornley, Kim & Roberto Valenzeula, Gustavo Fernandez, Kevin Kubota, Amber Larkin, Sarah Calahan, Lindsay Allen, Jen Herbig, Joy Bianchi Brown, Lori Warner, Wanda Wen, Liz Cooper & Alec, and Angel Swanson who joined in this year to make them with me!
