Sunday, April 25th is Olive’s 12th birthday. I remember 12 years ago how surprised we were when my mother’s dog, Charlie, had puppies because no one even knew she was pregnant. I was there the day my Olive was born, and I took her home with me only four weeks later. I remember trying to project into my future to imagine what my life with a dog might be like. Now I can’t imagine my life without her. She has been the very best dog and friend I could have ever hoped for, and she makes me laugh and feel happy every day.

This is Olive’s friend, Rabbit. Rabbit was recently diagnosed with cancer and needs treatments. My heart would be broken if Olive were sick, and I really want to help Rabbit and her family.

Best Friends Pet Adoption Day

So at my November 11th PUG I said I wanted to start doing more charity work. The very next day, my friend, Roberto Valenzuela, sent me an email asking if I would be interested in being the photographer for the Best Friends Animal Society Pet Adoption Day at the La Brea Tar Pits. Being completely obsessed with my own dog, Olive, I was really excited to do it. I didn’t realize how heart breaking the event would be for me. Every pet wore a little shirt or bandana that said “Adopt Me” that just got me so choked up. (It kind of reminded me of the episode in “Freaks & Geeks” where Bill whispers “pick me pick me!” every time they choose teams for P.E….that always made me well up a little.) I wanted to take every single pet home.

Olive Goes to Hollywood Out-takes Week on OAD

I am thrilled that “Olive Goes to Hollywood” took second place in the album competition at WPPI. I had to really scale the book down for the purpose of the competition, and although I love how it turned out, a lot of great shots didn’t make it in. I’ve decided for An Olive a Day to an “Olive Goes to Hollywood” outtake week along with stories about the shoots themselves!

Today I’m going to try to avoid the computer, emails and the phone and sit down with Marty to write out our goals for 2009. I know there is a lot of gloom and doom out there about the economy, but I am feeling optimistic and I’m going to try to create realistic goals for myself and my company. I am looking forward to a positive, successful year, and I with that for you and your families, too!

I stole this image from Olive’s Blog because it was just too cute not to post here, too. We called all over town to find the 2009 glasses and couldn’t believe that the one store we found who had them wouldn’t break up the bag of 25 that they came in. It seemed to me that December 31, 2008 would pretty much be the LAST day you could hope to sell novelty “2009″ glasses, but they refused to open the bag and sell them by the pair.

Jessica came up with the brilliant pipe cleaner idea. They fit Olive much better than the store-bought ones would have anyway!!

I am so excited to be heading up to the Bay Area with my darling boyfriend, Marty, tomorrow. I just love Christmas with my family, and I’m so happy Marty’s spending the holidays with us. I certainly hope that all of you are having a wonderful Holiday Season, too!

Today Olive was hanging out by the tiny pink tree I bought to decorate my house. (Sans ornaments because I think they are all out in the garage and I’m leaving town anyway…)

(for photographers: I shot this with the 45mm tilt-shift lens. I am just crazy about this lens. I love the look of it and I am finding it really fun to shift the plane for the depth of field. Even at 3.2 parts of both the tree and Olive’s face are in focus. I think its cool.)
